National Mentoring Month

January is National Mentoring Month and a great opportunity for kids and adults alike to consider adding mentorship to their lives in 2024. Mentoring provides meaningful connections for those involved and influences their lives and communities. For those who are mentored, it is linked to improved academic, social, and career prospects. For those who serve as mentors, the relationship can build leadership skills, network expansion, and provide an opportunity to give back to the community.

Mentoring shows young people that there are people who care about them and will help them through day-to-day challenges, yet one in three youth will go through life without one. Youth who are mentored report being…

·         75% more likely to hold a leadership role in a club or sports team

·         92% more likely to volunteer regularly in their communities

·         22% more likely to experience a sense of belonging while growing up

·         74% more likely to receive significant contributions for success later in life

·         69% more likely to get help with educational issues

·         58% more likely to have mental health support

Getting started is just a click away and the options are endless. Start at Mentor National to find a mentor or steps to become one and even resources for STEM Mentoring. PBS also offers a STEM mentoring program called SciGirls that’s full of opportunities. Young girls interested in STEM and pursuing a career in one of its fields, will greatly benefit from a mentor to inspire their ambitions, fuel their creativity, and grow their potential!
