G.R.E.A.T. Math Minds Graduation
“The GREAT Math Minds program was a huge success for our 3rd grade girls! They were often challenged by the work but their conversations amongst themselves and with the teachers was always engaging and pushed them to stretch their brains! One of the best aspects of this program was the incredible women in STEM careers that students met with and created projects with as they learned about engineering, astronauts, veterinarians, and the medical field. Our girls are excited to participate in this program again!”

From the beginning I was impressed with the way the Solar Program caught my student's attention. The first session, one about leadership and focus, was something I initially thought wouldn't catch the girls' attention. This would not be the first thing I was wrong about. The girls engaged with the topic instantly, and from there went on to see the entirety of the program as a challenge that they could accomplish. One of my toughest cases, a student named Jordan, spent the entire program convinced she would not have a boat and that the entire process was hopeless. To her surprise, she was able to create a boat that not only floated, but worked. Although she did not win, her response wasn't one of defeat. Upon talking to her later, her thoughts were more focused on what she would do next time, instead of bemoaning her loss. This ability to turn defeat into a growth mindset is something powerful, and something that the Solar Design Program did very well.

I loved the interaction between new people, and I really enjoyed thinking about different people's ideas for the same project. It was really interesting hearing about how different people would execute the same thing differently. Over all I had a great time!
