It Takes a Village: Investing in the Future of STEAM Education

Most people have heard the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” At Pink Space Theory, we believe that this philosophy also applies to educating students. Parents, teachers, administrators, and volunteers all play a vital role in nurturing curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning—especially in STEAM disciplines.

At Loch Lomond Elementary School, we are fortunate to have a remarkable example of this village in action. Daria, a current seventh grader and proud graduate of Loch Lomond Elementary, volunteers her time with third- and fourth-grade students in our GREAT Math Minds program. During her own years at Loch Lomond, Daria participated in the robotics club. She developed a strong connection with Mrs. Christine Johnson through the school’s gifted education program - Mrs. Johnson serves as both a gifted education teacher and one of the GREAT Math Minds instructors.

Daria volunteers with Pink Space Theory because she genuinely enjoys helping others and, in her own words, “likes to know stuff and likes to work with robots.” Her enthusiasm is contagious. She is highly interactive with students, and the girls in the program clearly look up to her. Pink Space Theory proudly recognizes Daria as an outstanding role model who inspires younger students through her dedication, curiosity, and positive attitude toward learning.

Although Daria modestly claims that math is not her strongest subject, she emphasizes that she truly enjoys it—especially when she sees students reach that pivotal moment of understanding. She loves witnessing “the moment when everything just clicks into place and makes sense.” Her favorite aspect of GREAT Math Minds is that it challenges girls to think creatively, explore new ideas, and strengthen their problem-solving skills.

The impact of the program extends beyond the classroom. Daria’s parents strongly support GREAT Math Minds and have enrolled their younger daughter, a current third grader, in the program. Daria’s mother describes GREAT Math Minds as “really special,” noting that it gives girls a head start in math and provides a focused, empowering opportunity during a critical stage of development.

The GREAT Math Minds program at Loch Lomond Elementary School is led by veteran educators Ms. Christine Johnson and Ms. Christine McCullum. Pink Space Theory is deeply grateful for their commitment, as well as for the dedication of student leaders like Daria, who exemplify the long-term impact of early STEAM education.

With the continued support of community partners and sponsors, Pink Space Theory can expand programs like GREAT Math Minds—creating more opportunities for young students to build confidence, creativity, and a lifelong interest in STEAM fields. Daria herself hopes to one day pursue a career in Health and Human Services as a clinical therapist, a testament to how early mentorship and educational investment help shape future leaders.
